Frequently Asked Questions

Chicago is too large to answer that in one word, so most renters narrow by corridor before they narrow by building. Along the South Side lakefront, four neighborhoods carry most of the apartment search:

East Hyde Park
The strip running from roughly 49th Street south to the museum campus at 56th, east of the Metra tracks, is dense with high-rise buildings from the 1920s, many of them built originally as apartment hotels. The Mayfair holds the corner at 55th Street, where the street runs east and ends at Promontory Point. Walk Score rates this address a 92, inside the band it calls a walker's paradise.

Hyde Park
West of the tracks, Hyde Park spreads around the Gothic quadrangles of the University of Chicago and the shops along 53rd Street. Nichols Park, Harper Court, and the Court Theatre all sit inside it. Buildings here run lower than the towers on the lakefront side, with more courtyard walk-ups and greystones.

Kenwood
Directly north, Kenwood mixes some of the largest historic houses on the South Side with courtyard apartment buildings on its side streets. It shares the Metra Electric line with Hyde Park and sits nearer the 47th Street station. The lakefront parks form its eastern edge.

Woodlawn
South of the Midway Plaisance, Woodlawn borders Jackson Park and has drawn steady attention since the Obama Presidential Center opened there in June 2026. The park covers 551 acres by the Chicago Park District count and holds a golf course, three harbors, and the Osaka Garden on Wooded Island.

Life on this stretch of the South Side is shaped by two defining features: Lake Michigan along the eastern edge and a major research university at its center. For renters, that combination influences the daily routine in several distinct ways.

A Street That Ends at Promontory Point
Fifty-fifth Street runs east from the building and stops at a twelve-acre limestone peninsula that Alfred Caldwell landscaped in the Prairie style and the city named a Chicago Landmark in 2023. Its stone council rings still serve as fire pits. The Point anchors the south end of Burnham Park, which the Chicago Park District measures at roughly 654 acres.

Two Museums and the Obama Presidential Center Within a Mile
The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, renamed in 2024, occupies the only fair building still standing on the original 1893 World's Columbian Exposition grounds, about a third of a mile south. The Obama Presidential Center opened to the public in Jackson Park on June 19, 2026, on a campus of roughly 19 acres with a museum tower, a Chicago Public Library branch, and outdoor courts. From The Mayfair, both are a walk rather than a drive.

A Campus Economy Next Door
The University of Chicago counts more than 20,000 faculty and staff and describes itself as the largest private employer on the South Side and the second largest in the city. Its main quadrangle sits just under a mile west, with UChicago Medicine a little beyond that. The concentration keeps the neighborhood's bookstores, theaters, and restaurants busy through the academic year and the summer alike.

Errands Without a Car
The Hyde Park Shopping Center, with a Trader Joe's and a Barnes and Noble, is a short walk northwest. Jackson Park spreads to the south. The nearby Lakefront Trail runs 18.5 miles for pedestrians from Ardmore Avenue down to 71st Street.

Living at The Mayfair puts the lakefront a short walk east and the University of Chicago campus under a mile west. Residents regularly head to:

  • Promontory Point
  • Griffin Museum of Science and Industry
  • The Obama Presidential Center
  • 57th Street Beach
  • Osaka Garden on Wooded Island in Jackson Park
  • Frederick C. Robie House
  • Court Theatre
  • Smart Museum of Art
  • Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures Museum
  • Hyde Park Art Center
  • Harper Court
  • Midway Plaisance Ice Skating Rink

Every stop on that list sits roughly a mile or less from the building, which is unusual for a city this spread out.

Commuters at The Mayfair are roughly seven miles south of the Loop, with the CTA Jackson Park Express stopping outside the door and the Metra Electric reaching Millennium Station in about twenty minutes. That puts a research university, several hospital systems, and the city's finance and insurance core inside a workable commute:

  • University of Chicago (Hyde Park)
  • UChicago Medicine (Hyde Park)
  • Griffin Museum of Science and Industry (Jackson Park)
  • The Obama Foundation (Jackson Park)
  • La Rabida Children's Hospital (lakefront at 65th Street)
  • Illinois Institute of Technology (Mies Campus in Bronzeville)
  • Chicago Public Schools (headquarters on West Madison Street)
  • Health Care Service Corporation, parent of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (East Randolph Street)
  • United Airlines (Willis Tower)
  • Northern Trust (South LaSalle Street)
  • CME Group (South Wacker Drive)
  • McDonald's (global headquarters in the West Loop)
  • Rush University Medical Center (Illinois Medical District on the Near West Side)

The Hyde Park and Jackson Park names at the top of that list all sit within about a mile, and Metra runs direct to the Loop, with onward connections to downtown and the Near West Side.

Amenities at The Mayfair are built around making everyday life easier in a twelve-story building on a busy corner, while letting the surrounding neighborhood provide the entertainment, dining, and activity beyond home.

A Convenience Store and Package Lockers in the Building
A convenience store operates inside the building, making it easy to pick up everyday essentials without leaving home, especially on a cold February evening. Package lockers stay accessible seven days a week, and the laundry center runs around the clock with Wi-Fi. Together, these features make everyday errands more convenient without requiring residents to leave the building.

Oversized Layouts With Formal Proportions
Homes run from 450 square feet in the studios to 1,375 in the largest two bedroom, with high ceilings and crown molding carrying through. Select apartments add a formal dining room or an eat-in kitchen with a breakfast bar. Apartment features also include walk-in closets with organizer shelving and gas ranges.

An Express Bus Stop at the Front Door
The CTA Jackson Park Express picks up on the corner outside, with routes 28 and 171 at the same stop and the Metra Electric station a six-minute walk south west. Assigned parking is available for residents who keep a car, and a bicycle storage room serves the ones who ride the Lakefront Trail instead. Walk Score rates the address a 92.

A Smoke Free Building That Welcomes Pets
The Mayfair is entirely smoke-free, and up to two cats or dogs are welcome per apartment, subject to a fifty pound weight limit per dog and a list of breed restrictions. An electronic entry system controls the front door, management keeps an office on site, and maintenance answers emergencies at any hour. Residents also have access to a 24-hour fitness center.
